Introduction
Ceramic paper is a high-temperature insulation material made from ceramic fibers. Due to its excellent thermal resistance and lightweight properties, it's widely used in industries such as metallurgy, glass, and petrochemicals. Understanding its manufacturing process is crucial for ensuring quality and performance.
Materials Used in Ceramic Paper
Ceramic paper primarily consists of alumina-silicate fibers. These fibers are derived from high-purity alumina and silica, typically in a fiber ratio of approximately 50-60% alumina and 40-50% silica. Binders may also be used to enhance the paper's mechanical properties.
Manufacturing Process
Fiber Preparation
The process begins with the preparation of ceramic fibers. Raw materials are melted at temperatures exceeding 1800°C, followed by fiberization through techniques such as blowing or spinning. The resulting fibers generally have diameters ranging from 1 to 10 micrometers.
Mixing and Forming
Once the fibers are prepared, they are mixed with binders and other additives to create a slurry. Consistency is maintained by controlling the fiber-to-binder ratio, typically around 10:1 by weight. The slurry is then laid out in sheets on a forming machine, using vacuum dewatering to remove excess water.
Drying and Finishing
The wet sheets are transferred to a drying oven, where they're heated to temperatures between 100°C and 150°C. This process solidifies the structure and improves mechanical stability. Final thickness can vary between 0.5 to 5 mm, depending on application requirements.
Characteristics of Ceramic Paper
Ceramic paper is renowned for its thermal insulation capabilities and can withstand temperatures up to 1200°C. It also features low thermal conductivity, typically below 0.27 W/m·K, and high thermal shock resistance, making it ideal for high-temperature applications.
